All About Your Teacher Book

I created this book for my class and decided to make an editable version available for sale in my TPT Store! The "All About Your Teacher" book includes 7 editable pages where you can place your own pictures and text. There is also a corresponding "All About Our Class" book included so that your class can make their own version of the book. What a great way for your students to get to know you at the beginning of the year! Head over and check it out!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear {Freebie}

After reading Brown Bear Brown Bear, we created our own version of the book. This gave the kids some good practice writing their names. I had to highlight in yellow for some of them to trace over. Then I pasted their pictures on each page. On the last page is a picture of our whole class. The kids love seeing their faces in this book and they want to read it again and again! Walking through the Jungle

We love making class books! This week we read Walking through the Jungle. The kids had fun joining in reading this predictable text...and they love pointing out the onomatopoeia on each page! Each child chose a setting and a character to create one page for our class book. One child even wrote "ROAR! on her page and told me that she wanted to use onomatopoeia in her story, too. So smart :)

Ordinal Numbers & Eric Carle

You may have already realized this, but I love integrating literature and math! And Eric Carle's book, "10 Little Rubber Ducks" went along perfectly with a lesson on ordinal numbers.

After reading the story and discussing ordinal numbers, I handed out ducks on popsicle sticks that I labeled with ordinal numbers. The children had to line up and put themselves in order from 1st-10th. Then I called out different ordinal numbers and the class had to identify who was in that position.

Then we created our own class book, modeled after Eric Carle's story. Each child wrote and illustrated one page. I gave each student a duck with an ordinal number on it so they would know how to write their numbers. Click here for the template. It turned out pretty cute! Here are some samples:

Math & Literature

I am crazy about integrating math and literature. I'm on a mission to find books for every single math topic! Using literature to introduce math concepts really helps the children to see math in different contexts and to understand that math is actually useful in everyday life. Besides, they love hearing stories!

We started off our unit on shapes by reading "The Shape of Things."
We went on a shape hunt around the classroom
using these shape pointers that I made.
We even used our bodies to make shapes!

  We made shapes from toothpicks
  and clay.

We learned about equal parts with the story  "The Doorbell Rang." This is a story about children who share cookies with their family and friends. Then we figured out how to share our own "cookies" equally with our friends.

First, we figured out how to share a cookie equally between two friends. We each got one half.

Then we figured out how to share a cookie among four friends. We each got one fourth.

"A Pair of Socks" was a fun story about sorting. The kids were excited when I brought out a whole basket full of socks, which we sorted by color, pattern, and size.

We also made some class counting books based on these stories. I will post pictures of our work soon.
